Portrait of Piet Viljoen

Piet Viljoen (Shareholder & Non Executive Director)

Piet is a South African investor, with more than four decades of investment experience.

He began his career as a lecturer at the University of Pretoria, after which he joined the South African Reserve Bank as an economic analyst. Piet joined Allan Gray Investment Counsel in 1991 as a portfolio manager and moved to Investec Asset Management in 1995, where he built a strong following as portfolio manager of the Investec Opportunity Fund.

In 2003, he founded RECM (Regarding Capital Management), a financial services and investment business based in Cape Town, in which Jan is his partner.

Piet is known for a value-oriented, fundamentally driven approach, with a focus on buying assets at a discount to intrinsic value and maintaining a long-term, disciplined mindset, often investing in areas that are out of favour when prospective returns are attractive.

Piet publishes a weekly email newsletter called “Regarding…”, in which he shares his views on investments and markets as well as his perspectives on global developments and the world more broadly.

Apart from being a co-owner of Maximus, and serving as a director – his most important role is acting as a sounding board to Jan.
